A: Although many variables enter into this, here are the average median prices for a new 1800 square foot house with siding, three bedrooms, two baths, and a half-acre lot:

Q: What about churches in and around Arab?

A: Most common denominations are found in Arab. Depending on your taste, there are small country churches and large city churches (and vice versa). A Catholic Church is located in nearby Guntersville, and a Synagogue is located in Huntsville.

 

Q: What library facilities does Arab have to offer?

A: The Arab Public Library has eight employees and four volunteers. It has 40,000 books, 70 periodicals and a rotating selection of video and audiotapes. Library hours:

Q: What community activities is the
Arab Chamber of Commerce involved with?

A: The Arab Chamber of Commerce has a membership of just under 400. Annual activities sponsored by the Chamber include a Community Fair, Business Women’s Luncheon, Christmas Parade, Legislative Trip, Industry Appreciation, Seminars, Retail Promotions, Annual Membership Banquet and more. The President, Melissa Cook, is assisted by office manager, Melody Taylor, a crew of Chamber ambassadors and junior ambassadors, an elected board of directors, and other volunteers.

 To have your water/sewer turned on, you must pay a $60 service charge if you live inside the city limits. The office is open from 7:30-4:00 Monday-Friday.

The phone company is locally owned and operated. There is a $200.00 deposit for new service, but if you have good credit, you do not have to pay the deposit. The office is open 8:00-4:30 Monday-Friday. To sign up for a new service you need to be there by 4:00.

Residents must pay a $180.00 deposit to have electricity turned on. This can be done from 7:30-4:00 Monday-Friday.

General Information

Car Tags

Automobile license plates or stickers must be purchased annually and are due and for sale during the year according to the first letter of your last name, i.e. A’s in January, etc. at the Marshall County Courthouse, Guntersville. You may renew car tags in Arab at the Recreation Department (931-2702).

Driver’s License

Driver’s license is renewable for a fee of $20.00 for four years at the Probate Judge’s Office, Marshall County Courthouse, Guntersville. Examination for driver’s license is given on Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. The examiner is located in the Courthouse Annex, Guntersville. Applicants for a learners permit must be at least 15 years of age, and applicants for a driver’s license must be at least 16 years of age. New residents must secure driver’s license within 30 days.

Personal Taxes

State, County, and Municipal ad valorem taxes must be paid by January 1st of each year, at the Tax Assessor Office, Marshall County Courthouse, Guntersville.

City and County homestead exemption applications must be filed with the County Tax Assessor, Marshall County Courthouse, by December of the year in order to qualify for this exemption. Re-qualification is not necessary.

Voting Laws

In order to vote in Alabama, a person must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years old or older. A person must have registered within 10 days prior to the election. A person should register with the Board of Registrars, in order to vote in county, state and national elections. To register you must go to the Marshall County Courthouse, Guntersville.

Marriage License

Marriage licenses are issued by the Probate Judge’s Office, Guntersville. A girl must be 18 and a boy 18 to secure a license without parents consent. Minimum age with parents consent is 14 for girls and 14 for boys. The cost of the marriage license is $25.00 or 34.50 cash for a court house ceremony. They may be obtained Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday until 6:00 p.m.

All licenses expire September 30th of each year. The above licenses may be obtained at the Probate Judge’s Office, Guntersville, and numerous authorized establishments throughout the county such as bait shops, fishing camps, etc.

Anti-Litter Laws

Dumping trash or litter on highways or right of way is a misdemeanor and the guilty person is subject to a $50.00 fine.

Registration of Boats

All boats must be registered each year. Registrations are due and for sale during the year according to the first letter of your last name, i.e. A’s in January, etc. at the Marshall County Courthouse, in the Probate Judge’s Office, Guntersville for $12.00 to $51.00 depending on the length of the boat.

Pet Laws

All dogs must be vaccinated annually against rabies. Stray dogs are not allowed in the city. All dogs must be properly tagged and vaccinated. Arab has a leash law. Call police for more information, 256-586-8124.

Garbage

Garbage is picked up at residence once a week and for businesses a minimum of twice a week. There is a small charge for this service included in the water bills. Curbside recycling is available, once a week, and encouraged. Contact

Television Cable

Connect to TV cable by calling Charter Communications at 1-800-226-2146. The installation fee for new service is $40.00 and $25.00 for an existing service. Premium channels are available at an additional cost.

Arab Ambulance Service operates with 8 full-time and 12 part-time personnel, all of whom have at least basic EMT training, and three are paramedics. The city service runs three ambulances and a convalescent coach.
