Education

When making a list of Arab’s many great attributes, certainly its school system would have to be at the top. Arab City Schools have an established tradition of excellence in the areas of academics, athletics and extra-curricular activities, college preparation and community involvement. The system has been selected every year since 1998 by SchoolMatch to receive the “What Parents Want Award” through its data collection of information from parents relocating from different parts of the country. While proud of its tradition of excellence Arab City Schools consistently seeks to provide more and better opportunities to the community it serves. As Superintendent John Mullins has said, “With unsurpassed determination, the good people of Arab City Schools are committed to grow our excellence.”

As proof of the superintendent’s statement, it should be noted that all schools in the system are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Arab schools are demonstrations sites for both the Alabama Reading Initiative and the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative. Further proof can be found in an analysis of the system’s test scores. Arab schools consistently place in the top state rankings on standardized test scores. In every area of recent testing Arab has placed well. Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, or DIBELS, the state mandated reading assessment for primary grades, ranks Arab Primary School students at 3rd in the state. While Stanford -10 Achievement Scores for grades 3 through 8 place Arab 6th in the state. High School ACT scores are above state and national averages and the percentage of Arab High School Students passing the Alabama High School Graduation Exam is above 99.5%. High School students received a total of $1,330,288 among 88 students at Award’s Day in spring 2005.

Course offerings at Arab schools are designed to meet the needs of all students. Because Arab is only a short drive from Huntsville, a major center for scientific and technological development, the city school system builds from a strongly academic core. Additional course offerings include: 7 different state recognized career technical programs, including a nationally competitive Health Occupations Students of America program; Dual Enrollment courses and Accelerated College Enrollment courses are offered to Arab High School juniors and seniors through Snead State Community College; a nationally competitive robotics program; broad-casting and journalism; and Pre-engineering. Academic competition teams such as Space Bowl, Scholar’s Bowl and Math Team are also open to student try-outs. By fall of 2006 Arab Junior High School will have 4 new classrooms and a new auditorium/gym.

Whether your athletic interests are on the field, on the court, at the track, or in the pool Arab City Schools has something to offer you. Arab’s athletes are able to compete in every sport offered by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. And just as students are encouraged to excel athletically, opportunities for student development in the performing arts are also provided. Arab Junior and High Schools Band and choral programs are exceptional. Performances by Arab Musical Theater are eagerly anticipated and play to “sell-out crowds” in the 1,000 seat high school auditorium.

Community support is another contributing factor to the excellence of Arab City Schools. Attendance and support of competitions, concerts and performances is extraordinary. Area concerned citizens seeking to render assistance to Arab schools formed the Arab City Schools Foundation which is able to provide grants to teachers for the funding of worthy projects that fall outside the general curriculum. Additionally, $41,400 dollars in local grants were awarded to high school students in spring of 2005.
