Transportation
Two major highways, U. S. Highway 231 and Alabama
Highway 69 serve Arab. Highway 231 connects with Alabama Highway
79 to connect Huntsville and Birmingham. Highway 69 connects
Cullman and Guntersville. Four motor freight companies service
Arab. The truck lines travel interstate, intrastate or both, with
1 to 5 trucks available daily for runs. Interstate 65 connection
is only 20 miles away to the southwest via Highway 69.
General aviation airports, which presently serve Arab, include those at
Guntersville (13 miles), Albertville (18 miles), South Huntsville (20 miles) and
Cullman (20miles). In addition, general aviation has use of the Huntsville International
Airport (45 miles) and Birmingham Airport (55 miles).
Easy access to other southeastern markets is
possible through a nearby waterway. The Tennessee River in
Guntersville with a minimum channel depth of 9 feet has terminal
facilities available for barge lines. This channel is part of the
Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
Utilities
The Arab Electric Cooperative provides electrical power to consumers in
the city of Arab and surrounding areas. The Cooperative obtains its power from
the Tennessee Valley Authority and has over the years developed a system capable
of supporting substantial growth. There is no set limit of power available to
industrial customers.
The Sewer System is owned and operated by the City of Arab Sewer Board and
serves most of the city.
Residents are supplied with natural gas by Southern Natural Company, which
is distributed by the Marshall County Gas District.
The Arab Water Board by means of a modern treatment
facility and distribution system serving the City of Arab as well other
portions of Marshall County and adjacent counties provides potable
Water for both residential and industrial use. This water comes
from a 4,500,000 GPD treatment plant located on the Tennessee
River. The system has an 8.7 million-gallon storage capacity.
The City of Arab contracts with a privately owned company for solid waste
disposal.
Area retail dealers distribute fuel oil and LP gas.
Cable Television service is provided by Charter Communications.
Brindlee Mountain Telephone Company provides local telephone service and
Western Union offers telegraph service. Parcel delivery is available from the
U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service (UPS), Trailways Bus Lines and a variety
of overnight carriers.
